Remodelled army: reforms aimed at making soldiers more professional

Article Abstract:

Thai army commanding General Wimol Wongwanich wants to streamline the 200,000-member Thai army by reducing its manpower, shrinking the reserve corps, enhancing training and being more careful in buying foreign weaponry. Interior Minister Chavalit Yongchaiyut began the program, which will cut army strength by 50,000 between 1992-97 and by another 10% in the five years after that. Wimol intends to deal with the army's top-heavy condition by phasing out senior-officer promotion exercises that have allowed 55% of the country's generals to hold sinecures.
