Renaissance men

Article Abstract:

US banks have undergone mergers and have boosted their profits, increasing efficiency and reducing costs. The main US banks have seen an increase in their market capitalization. Banks have focused on risk-adjusted returns, moving away from business that did not bring in enough profit. Loans have been securitized and new measures of risk have been introduced. Employee numbers have risen, as have revenues. There is still concern about a decline in the credit quality of portfolios of banks since 1993, and high debt levels of companies and consumers.

The doomed and the dangerous

Article Abstract:

Commercial banks have been undertaking mergers, and at the same time some banks are losing their chief executives. The banks have been affected by instability in financial markets in 1998, and there are questions about the possibility of commercial banks making a success of investment banking. Competition in retail banking is increasing as financial markets are liberalized, and European banks face competition from the US. Banks could separate investment banking and commercial banking.

Fire-sale brigade

Article Abstract:

The Indonesian government is keen to restructure the country's banking system, in contrast to the reluctance of many neighboring countries. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has reached an agreement with the government on bank restructuring. Owners of banks will have to pay for failures. The IMF has helped the economy by slowing the pace of restructuring. Government ministers wanted a rapid unloading of assets which would have allowed assets to be bought cheaply.
