Article Abstract:

Mario Monti was an economics professor and university rector prior to becoming an Italian European commissioner, and he is seen as a possible front man for the center-right in Italy. He has been responsible for financial services and the single market, and is able to use economic theory in practical ways. He aims to close tax loopholes to harmonise taxation in the European Union (EU) and favors the abolition of duty-free stores. He favors fiscal discipline in the EU, as well as low levels of government intervention in the economy.
