Article Abstract:

Relations between Latin America and the US have improved as free market policies have become accepted in Latin America, though relations with Asia have also developed in Peru and Chile. There are also historical links with Europe, and European Union (EU) leaders are meeting Latin American leaders in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in Jun 1999. Europe is the main source of aid for the region, which is also a key market for European goods, and trade is a key issue to be discussed.

The use of a laser beam to read music from records was proposed in the 1980s, and a small company called ELP has developed a way for such a device to work. The laser beam reads the grooves even if they are warped or well-worn. The system from ELP costs $11,500.
