Rhetoric is risky, in light of diversified 'Chinese' culture

Article Abstract:

Conflict between China and its neighbors may be imminent if Jiang Zemin pushes through with his theory of emphasizing the concept of 'greater China' as a major part of a 'greater Chinese civilization.' This nationalist idea will underscore Chinese spiritual values and cultural traditions. Conflict may arise if the concept is regarded as including overseas Chinese in other countries, especially those in Southeast Asia. Since these overseas Chinese have been assimilated by their host countries, Chinese diaspora will be a sensitive issue and the future peace and prosperity of East Asia may be jeopardized.

Diving markets raise questions about Suharto's future

Article Abstract:

Some political analysts speculate that Indonesian President Suharto's reign may finally come to an end as the country's economy worsens due to rapid devaluation of the rupiah. President Suharto, who has already served six consecutive five-year terms, has failed to restore public confidence in the economy. His budget speech in January 1998 did little to revive the local currency, which has continued to lose its value since the year began.

Understanding the disparate clashes in Indonesia

Article Abstract:

The outbreak of ethnic violence in different places in Indonesia, namely, Ambon, West Kalimantan and its major cities, has common elements. However, they should not be regarded as typical of other ethnic and religious tensions in Indonesia. Their intensity varies considerably from one place to another and involves the killing of minority Muslim settlers by original ethnic inhabitants in a predominately Muslim Indonesia.
