Rikkidioksidis ili r j hti Valkeakoskella

Article Abstract:

The explosion of a storage container caused material damage of Fmk 10mn (US$ 1.8mn) on the S teri's sulphocarbide factory in Valkeakoski, central Finland on 20 June 1998. The accident was caused by gasified sulphur dioxide which had leaked into the container for yet unknown reasons. The explosion was followed by fire causing a temporary chemical leakage into the nearby bay. Some sulphur dioxide also was airborne but according to the fire department the amount is so minor that it will not harm people. None of the 40 people at the factory were injured in the accident. In addition to material damage, the factory will suffer losses for stoppage of production. According to S teri, one machine will be in production already within this week and the rest within two weeks. The factory produces i.a. viscose fibre used in textiles and refreshing towels.
