Rocking in the twilight zone

Article Abstract:

Chinese rock stars have responded to the growing popularity of heavy metal by creating a native form of heavy metal. Chinese hard rock, or Zhong Jinshu, derives its originality by combining themes from China's Communist past as well as Western rock music. The 'Red Rock 'n' Roll' album, produced by Hou Moren, is a classic example of this combination, and features songs including 'The March of the Volunteers' and 'Commune Members Are All Sunflowers' by the popular singer Zhang Chu. Meanwhile, heavy metal records have been released from state censorship, and private companies are allowed to buy rights for both domestic and foreign albums.
