The Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit has developed into a North-South confrontation concerning issues of sovereignty and financial aid. The focus on money is misplaced, since it leads policy makers in the developing world to believe that environmental protection is in the rich countries' interest, not their own.

Keep talking: Malaysia's forests

Article Abstract:

Environmentalists may not be able to get Malaysia to agree to a binding contract regarding its country's logging industry. Much of the earth's forest is in Malaysia, and the country needs the timber exports to sustain its economy. It has made some reduction commitments, however.

Most of the world's environmental problems can be traced to two causes: poverty and population growth. The world leaders and international environmental policy makers present at the 1992 Earth Summit should switch their focus from global warming to these two issues.
