Article Abstract:

Singapore Telecommunications Ltd. used its foreign investment activities as a learning experience in coping with a deregulated telecommunications environment and global competitiveness. Singapore Telecom invested in several foreign telecommunications projects and in a failed cable television project in Singapore. Singapore Telecom decided that expanding towards foreign projects may be the key to growth since it will be working in a deregulated environment at home limiting its potential for growth and as a means for effectively utilizing its financial base which is growing.

India opens phone sector, inviting bids from foreign telecom firms

Article Abstract:

The Indian government recently announced that it would open up its telecommunications market to foreign firms in line with PM P.V. Narashima Rao's economic reform program. Foreign telecommunications companies have already been invited to submit proposals for basic and cellular telephone services for several areas. A number of telecommunications carriers have expressed enthusiasm for the potential of the Indian market.

AT&T and Aditya V. Birla to pursue telecom deals

Article Abstract:

AT&T Corp. and Aditya V. Birla Group are bidding for cellular and telephone franchises in India. They have signed a memorandum of understanding to study business opportunities in India. The two companies could operate joint ventures if they win licenses. AT&T is among the many Westerm telecommunications companies forming alliances to position themselves in the Indian market.
