Suharto trims list of projects to be delayed or reviewed

Article Abstract:

Pres Suharto has responded to business lobbying that calls for the reduction of infrastructure projects for review or postponement by giving the go-signal to four power projects and one tollway project. The president postponed the activities of several projects due to the devaluation of the rupiah. The move reflects efforts to safeguard economic development in the country by maintaining currency reserves. Projects given the go-signal include Wayang Windu, Salak, Dieng units 1-3, Pare-Pare and Surabaya.

Turmoil brings opportunity for a cleanup in economy

Article Abstract:

The recent devaluation of the rupiah should prompt Indonesian President Suharto to enforce economic reforms that would remove or minimize the persistent problems in the economy. Problems related to business include corruption, inefficiency and excessive borrowing by local firms that threaten to undermine economic progress in the country. The rupiah recently experienced devaluation similar to that experienced by Thailand's baht due to unsound business practices and economic policy.
