Shangri-La's price drop reflects lack of support for plan to acquire hotels

Article Abstract:

Shangri-La Asia Ltd. stock price declined from 9.10 Hongkong dollars on Jan. 27, 1995 to 7.85 Hongkong dollar on Feb. 10, 1995. Stock analysts attributed the sharp decline in Shangri-La's stocks to the companies recent announcement of several new acquisitions in Asia. The analysts noted that many shareholders were concerned about the acquisitions since they are located in less appetizing hotel markets such as Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Bangkok and the Philippines.

Analysts point to bargains in Thailand's hotel sector

Article Abstract:

Oriental Hotel (Thailand) PCL has been one of the best-performing stocks in the country in 1995, with its stock price appreciating by over 20% since the latter part of 1994. However, the hotel sector is still considered a poor performer by regional fund managers, citing its liquidity. It suffered heavy blows as Thailand's tourism industry experienced a severe downturn due to the Persian Gulf War in 1991 and widesread protests in Bangkok in 1992.
