Rumble in the jungle: politics of proposed Malaysian dam

Article Abstract:

The M$1.8 billion Pergau hydroelectric dam project in Kelantan state, Malaysia has been halted by several problems. Opposition politicians and environmentalists raised objections to the environmental damage 600-megawatt plant and questioned the awarding of the bulk of the contract to Balfour Beatty Construction International Ltd. Water rights linked to the project has also become a focus of confrontation between Kelantan state officials and the federal government. These problems have derailed Tenaga Nasional Berhad's plan to double power capacity to 10,000 megawatts in 10 years.

Malaysian oracle

Article Abstract:

Former Malaysian Finance Minister Daim Zainuddin remains a controversial figure even after his resignation in 1991. Daim, whom some people claim to be worth more than M$1-2 billion, is currently a visiting fellow at the Harvard Business School. He is serving as a consultant to faculty members who are finding ways of applying the Malaysian model of government to South Africa. He has also been appointed Malaysian chairman of the 'Northern Triangle' development group which includes Indonesia and Thailand.

Minister in a muddle?

Article Abstract:

Malaysian Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is facing mounting criticism over a number of controversial decisions and his perceived ambivalence on regulatory issues. Critics have cited his withdrawal of new guidelines on foreign investment and his awarding of a telecommunications contract to five foreign-led companies. However, observers say that some attacks against the official are meant to thwart his political ambitions.
