Rupiah plunge stirs doubt in massive Asian rescue plans: talk that President is ill sends currency reeling, despite grand IMF economic-aid package

Article Abstract:

The Rupiah's devaluation on news that Pres Suharto is ill raises questions on the viability of the IMF rescue package for Indonesia. The Rupiah dropped 22% during the first week of Dec 1997 which could mean a loss of confidence in the bailout package as the package was patterned after the Latin American debt rescue plan. Economists argue however, that the plans are long term and that the plan needs more time before it may be evaluated.

Article Abstract:

Astra International's stock prices have risen by as much as 65% from previous levels because of many factors including the rumor that a leading businessman was about to take charge of the company. The company has varied interests ranging from agribusiness to finance. Its potential is considered by analysts as promising although the increase in stock price is regarded as merely symptomatic of the desire of some investors to speculate.

Jakarta says current-account deficit will shrink, but analysts are skeptical

Article Abstract:

The Indonesian government predicts that the country's trade deficit will decline to $6.87 billion during FY 1996, which begins on Apr. 1, 1996. However, economists questioned the feasibility of such a prediction, noting that previous government estimates were too optimistic. They added that exports for the past fiscal year have continued to grow at a slower rate that imports.
