Russian chase skipper face charges

Article Abstract:

Valery Yarantsev, skipper of the trawler Elektron that was found to be operating in Barents Sea was accused of illegal fishing and asked to head towards Norway. Instead, Yarantsev changed course towards Russia. Consequently, Norway may file criminal case against Yarantsev. Norway claims full sovereignty on Barents Sea waters and Russia refuses to recognize such claims.

Trawler operator wants fixed quotas

Article Abstract:

Odd Johan Fladmark, a trawler operator from Finland, is of the opinion that freezer vessels that can process fish on board are easier to run when compared to fresher trawlers as fish disappear seasonally. Fladmark feels that a fixed quota for each species will help the trawlers to plan their activities more efficiently.

$5m forfeit in US Hout Bay case

Article Abstract:

Arnold Bengis, chairman of a Hout Bay fishing company, South Africa and Jeffrey Noll has pleaded guilty in Manhattan federal court to a scheme to illegally over-harvest rock lobster and toothfish and then illegally import them into the US. Both have agreed to forfeit a total of $5 million to the government.
