Russian love in a cold climate

Article Abstract:

Independent charities are becoming incresingly important in Russia, and local governments are increasingly using charities to provide services such as care for addicts. Business donations are becoming more important and are often anonymous in order not to attract attention from gangsters and tax authorities. Training for charity workers is provided at some 40 full-time centers in Russia. Some charities may face problems from the government as they become stronger, if they campaign on politically sensitive issues such as the environment.

Paul Mellon

Article Abstract:

Paul Mellon inherited a large amount of money, and gave much of it away. He was able to do this in a way that was well-regarded and unobtrusive, and he was aware of the unintentional damage that generosity could cause. He was involved in art galleries and saw the promotion of culture as important. He was also interested in environmental issues and saved a Georgia coastline that was under threat. Cambridge University is among the beneficiaries of his will, which has bestowed fortunes on a number of organizations.
