SA abalone fishery could be closed

Article Abstract:

The near extinction of the abalone shellfish due to rampant poaching in Western Cape waters made the fisheries department to close the fishery. The $11 million industry with 60,000 divers involved will be closed on the expiry on October 2003.

S Africa awards pelagic quotas

South African has awarded new quotas for pilchard and anchovy fishing in its marine waters for fifteen years. The government has also fixed a time frame for fishing companies to appeal against allocated quotas.
