SBC Warburg struggles to find its new identity

Article Abstract:

SBC Warburg is finding it hard to establish an identity for itself following its creation after Swiss Bank Corporation's 1995 merger with SG Warburg. SBC Warburg now has a new structure in which the corporate finance operations have been divided between three groups: equity capital markets; client services; and investment banking. SBC Warburg has lost several staff to other merchant banks, while clients are also taking a cautious approach to the merged bank. The merged bank also faces great competition from US investment banks, and risks losing the strong Warburgs brand name.

Cleaning up under the Act

Article Abstract:

Many countries across the world are now introducing strict environmental protection legislation, and this makes it very important for companies to look at the potential for environmental liabilities when making an acquisition. Environmental audits are now becoming a key element of the pre-acquisition process, ensuring that the environmental risks are highlighted. Investment bankers are beginning to use environmental issues as a bargaining tool in deal negotiations.

Larger local deals look to Leeds

Article Abstract:

Leeds, England, has experienced its largest local corporate finance deal with the defection of SG Hambro's regional team to KPMG Corporate Finance. The further consolidation of Leed's corporate finance players could be anticompetitive, with the city having just one independent merchant bank, NM Rothschild. The lack of choice and the potential for conflicts of interest may result in some local deals going to London.
