SHUTTING OUT RECESSION WITH SHUTDOWNS

Article Abstract:

The car manufacturers in India, such as Maruti Udyog Ltd (MUL), General Motors India Ltd (GMIL), Mahindra Ford India Ltd (MFIL) and Ind Auto have opted for maintenance shutdowns to face recession in the car market. MUL, which normally has two annual shutdowns in April and October, has now shifted its annual shutdowns to June and December. December is usually a slack period for sales. MUL's production has been reduced by 20 percent due to lower demand. Ind Auto is following a three-day week work schedule at its Kurla plant since last two weeks. Ind Auto, which is a joint venture of Fiat and Premier Automobiles, was earlier having six-day week work schedule with a daily production of 40 Uno brand cars. GMIL and MFIL will begin their annual shutdown in last week of December 1998. (gs)
