SLOVAKIA: CARREFOUR'S OBJECTIVES

Article Abstract:

Carrefour, the French retail group's first Slovakian hypermarkets, was visited by many people in the first fifteen days it was open, and now about 10,000 people a day shop at the store, with an average market basket of Sk 700 to Sk 1,000. This hypermarket, located in Bratislava, has 7,500 square metres of sales space. The stores carry more than 60,000 products and 90% of the food supplies come from Slovakia. Only 1% of the products are imported from France, including cheese and Evian mineral water, but this percentage is expected to increase because there are many French expatriates in Slovakia. The group plans to open a second hypermarket, with 9,000 square metres of sales space in Bratislava in November 2000, and to open two to four new stores in the country's major cities by 2002.
