SLOVAKIA/HUNGARY/AUSTRIA: OMV EYEING MOL STAKE?

Article Abstract:

OMV, the Austrian energy and chemicals group, has rejected rumours according to which it is seeking a stake in MOL , after the big Hungarian oil and gas company beat OMV in the privatisation of Slovnaft in Slovakia. Beside a refinery and 360 filling stations, Slovnaft gives MOL access to the Austrian and southern Polish markets, where it is planning to expand with the new partner. MOL is paying US$ 262mn for a 36.2% stake in Slovnaft, which is three times the current share price. MOL has an option to raise the stake to 50% plus one share. MOL and Slovnaft hold 38% of the oil products market in Slovakia and 36% in Hungary.

AUSTRIA: BANKS' RESPITE TO AVANTI

Article Abstract:

Creditor banks have agreed upon a credit line to and the freezing of interest payments by the troubled Austrian filling station operator Avanti. This gives the company time to find an international partner. While OMV has rejected being in talks with Avanti, Shell is seen as a likely partner. The Anglo-Dutch group already cooperates with Avanti in fuel business and is planning to re-enter east European markets. Avanti's problems are attributed partly to the company's rapid expansion on Eastern markets.

AUSTRIA: VEBA OEL EYEING OMV'S GAS BUSINESS?

Article Abstract:

Neither Veba Oel nor OMV would comment on a report in Oberosterreichische Nachrichten, according to which the German oil company is interested in taking over the gas business of the Austrian energy and chemicals group. It is said that in return OMV would get a stake in the filling station business of Veba Oel. With 2,400 filling stations, the Veba Oel subsidiary Aral is the German market leader. Also two other German groups, Bayernwerk and RWE, and Gaz de France are said to be eyeing the OMV gas business.
