SOUTHERN STATES MANAGE TO REIN IN REVENUE DEFICIT

Article Abstract:

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has reported that the revenue deficit of Maharashtra which was Rs669.60 crore in 1997-98 is expected to increase to Rs4,621 crore in 1998-99. The revenue deficit of Uttar Pradesh is likely to decrease to Rs7,093.80 crore in 1998- 99 (from Rs7,618 crore in 1997-98). Bihar's revenue deficit will increase to Rs2,627.60 crore (Rs1,562.80 crore). Madhya Pradesh's revenue deficit is likely to increase to Rs2,507.20 crore (Rs756.10 crore). The states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal have contained their revenue deficits. Orissa's revenue deficit has increased to Rs1,583.20 crore (Rs776.40 crore). Gujarat has converted its deficit to a surplus of Rs338.60 crore (Rs638.10 crore). RBI has stated that the non developmental expenditure has increased by 20.9 percent during 1990-95 from 18.2 percent in 1985-90. (rk)(m)

STATE BUDGET GOES SOFT ON POOR, LEAVES Rs125-CR GAP

Article Abstract:

The Karnataka Government plans to raise Rs138 crore more during 1999-2000. The total receipts were Rs17,747.36 crore - Rs13,991.78 crore revenue receipts and Rs3,755.58 crore capital receipts. The total expenditure was Rs17,818.63 crore - revenue expenditure of Rs15,390.97 crore and capital expenditure of Rs2,427.66 crore. There was an opening deficit of Rs126.72 crore and an overall deficit of Rs71.27 crore. The net additional resource mobilisation of Rs73 crore will leave an overall deficit of Rs124.99 crore in 1999-2000. (rk) (kvr)
