Safeway to buy Randall's Food Markets

Article Abstract:

Safeway Inc. has reached an agreement to acquire Randall's Food Markets Inc. for approximately $1.43 billion (1.36 billion euros). The deal involves cash and shares. The deal represents Safeway's fourth acquisition in a little more than two years. The deal helps Safeway as it attempts to form a chain that will extend nationwide. Randall's, which has 116 stores, will receive $855 million in cash from Safeway. The remainder will be paid in shares. Safeway will also assume Randall's debt, valued at $375 million.

Smith leaves Drugstore.com for venture

Article Abstract:

Drugstore.com Inc. founder Jed Smith has departed from the firm in order to join a new venture. In addition, Drugstore.com announced that Melinda French Gates has been appointed to its board of directors. Mrs. Gates is the wife of Bill Gates, the head of Microsoft Corp. The 33-year old Mr. Smith left as Drugstore.com's vice president of strategic partnerships.

Amazon.com taps Wilke to be operations chief

Jeffrey Wilke has been named as the new operations vice-president and general manager for Amazon.com. The 33-year old Wilke previously served as the general manager of AlliedSignal's Pharmaceutical Fine Chemicals division.
