Motorola wins chips accord

Samsung Electronics signs 5-year deals to supply chips to computer makers

Samsung Electronics Company Ltd. has signed several contracts, reportedly worth billions of dollars, to supply several leading computer manufacturers with semiconductors for a period of five years. IBM, Sun Microsystems Inc. and Dell Computer Corp. are just some of the companies that signed contracts with Samsung.

Quake hits the PC industry

Production delays ensued among Taiwanese computer chip manufacturers during the first week of Oct 1999, following an intense earthquake which rendered key areas in the country powerless. Reports revealed that the power outage forced major companies to suspend production, thereby causing the prices of microprocessors to rise considerably. Industry analysts believe that such conditions may create an adverse impact on adjacent business, particularly on the information technology sector.
