The 44.16 billion pounds (71.16 billion euros) merger between Glaxo Wellcome PLC and SmithKline Beecham PLC forms the largest drug maker in the world. However, the painstaking merger negotiations only presaged a series of challenges for the merged entity.

Sanofi and Synthelabo agree to merge forming a top 20 global drug maker

French pharmaceutical companies Synthelabo S.A. and Sanofi S.A. have announced their intention to merge. The new business, called Sanofi-Synthelabo, will become the sixth largest pharmacuetical firm in Europe. Annual sales are predicted to reach $6.2 billion.
