Saudi progress in power sector

Article Abstract:

The Saudi Council of Ministers is expected to approve the charter for the new Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) within the next few weeks, according to lawyers in Riyadh. The approval will pave the way for the privatization of the sector, both in terms of allowing the development of independent power projects and the sell-off of the government's 85% shareholding in the company once it is commercially viable, they add. SEC is to take over the assets and liabilities of the country's four huge regional power generators - the Saudi Consolidated Electric Companies - and six smaller regional generators. SEC will be responsible for transmission and distribution as well as generation.

Colombia targets power

Article Abstract:

The purchase on Dec 22, 1996, by a consortium made up of Endesa of Chile and Colombian finance concern Corfivalle of 99% of the 499 MW Betania hydroelectric plant for $300 million is part of moves by the Colombian government to encourage sales in the energy sector. It hopes in this way to double existing generating capacity of 10,000 MW by the year 2010. This follows a rather weak start to the first stage of the power plant privatisation programme undertaken at the end of 1996. The government has also sold its 14.25% stake in gas and oil-fired generator Termocartagena.
