George Nethercutt could stand for re-election in eastern Washington, though he had previously stated that he would not stay in office for over six years. He is a Republican politician and Republicans stated that Democrats had been in power too long, emphasising this by stating that Republicans would set a limit to their term in office. Sentiment among voiters has changed and Republicans no longer see term limits to be an issue, though some are standing by three-term pledges.

The US mid-term election results of 1998 show that the public has not given the Republicans a madate to impeach President Bill Clinton. The public's perception is that he has been treated unfairly. The impeachment process has started and there is a temptation to rush it, since the public mood opposes impeachment, but this temptation should be avoided or the rule of law could be affected. The election should not affect the grounds for impeachment if they exist.
