Second thoughts on globalisation

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the economic views advocated by Dani Rodrik regarding the assessment of the real impact of globalization reveals that his measurements are inadequate to determine the real costs of international trade. The prominent economist focuses on the impact of globalization on businesses and labor practices and his suggestions to minimize its impact by taxation of physical capital and the implementation of 'safeguards' against trade upsurges are not based on sound economic principles.

Article Abstract:

Several influential economists such as Roger Bootle and Lester Thurow argue that globalization has reduced the risk of inflation and changed the concept of comparative advantage. These theories are unproven, and politicians should be cautious about changing monetary policies based on them.

The International Monetary Fund recently held a symposium on how the EMU is likely to affect global economics. Most experts believe the EMU will rival the dollar as one of the world's main reserve currencies. The EMU may also cause the global monetary system to become more volatile.
