The United Kingdom Conservative party has performed poorly in Wales and Scotland, and holds a traditionalist view of the UK, seeing it as an organic nation with shared customs. Critics link the British identity to imperialism, war in Europe and anti-Catholicism. Englishness has been linked to racialist views, but opinion polls show a rangeof national identities. England has developed as a hybrid nation, and has grown through assimilating immigrants during its history.

The Conservative Party has made a number of blunders and gaffs during winter 1996-97, making it very likely that the party will go down to defeat and Labour will assume power. The party is divided on issues such as European Monetary Union and has made several tactical and strategic errors.
