Section 1: Goverment economic policy; The merit of training

Article Abstract:

A successful economy requires a high level of skills from its workers. The UK is lacking in research and development, investment in new technology and training. The government has tried to improve matters by bringing practical subjects into the national curriculum and increasing vocational qualifications. Other measures have included setting up Training and Enterprise Councils to oversee schemes such as employment training and youth training. It is argued that more training of those in work could be helpful.

Government economic policy; stimulating investment

Article Abstract:

Investment is seen as one of the most important factors in improving the UK economy. Government policy in the 1980's saw more private investment and less public funds being invested. UK investment has long been under scrutiny in comparison with the more successful economies of Japan and Germany. Some observers feel the government could improve UK investment by such means as more stability in interest rates, increasing demand by consumers and more promotion of research and development.

Changing views on immigration

Article Abstract:

Demand for labour is now exceeding supply in a range of labour markets in Europe and the US. This means that governments may be forced to adopt a more positive view on immigration. There are a number of benefits associated with allowing more workers to settle in the country than leave it, including encouraging entrepreneurship.
