Seeing at speed

Article Abstract:

Robots perceive visually using some 30 stills per second, and this can be too slow if the robot has to respond to rapidly moving objects. Robots are able to predict where objects are likely to be, to compensate for this deficiency. Prediction is not always easy, and the robots themselves may suffer problems such as wheels sticking. Research by University of Tokyo's Masatoshi Ishikawa has involved the development of a digital retina chip to provide robots with more visual clues.

Roboflops

Article Abstract:

The forecasts of robots doing work for people have not come true. Most robots are used in factories, but the factory workers still far outnumber the robots. The main problem is that robots cannot see, think or sense for themselves.
