Semmering: Aus f r den Bahntunnel?

Article Abstract:

An expert committee consisting of experts of the Austrian transport ministry, a Swiss railway expert and representatives of five Austrian states has drawn up a study of the options of improving the country's railway network. It estimates the costs of building the controversial Semmering rail tunnel at more than Sch 10bn. Another Sch 9bn would have to be invested in other sections of the so-called Southern line in order to prevent bottlenecks. The study concludes that the capacity of the existing Semmering line will be sufficient until 2015 even without building the proposed tunnel. If the Aspang line is electrified, the tunnel would not be needed for freight traffic before year 2025. However, the experts point out that the full-scale expansion of the existing Semmering line and of the Aspang line would be no ideal solution. Passenger transport capacity could be increased by using tilting trains. The experts also recommend the expansion of the lines Vienna-airport-Wampersdorf-Eisenstadt-Sopron . The study refers to the fact that the growth of rail transport has remained lower than forecast in the 1980s.
