Separating internal imagery from external form

Article Abstract:

The interior design of the new St Mungo Museum, Glasgow, Scotland, is described. The museum exhibits artefacts of world religions. Page and Park, architect, created a five-year old building with the atmosphere of an older one. The building was re-worked by Ian Begg, baronial revivalist architect, into a Gothic, monastic-style of architecture, incorporating original stained glass windows. The bench seating is made from comfortable American white oak. The lighting is aimed at preventing degradation of the artworks while attaining optimum viewing conditions.

What Schinkel found in Britain

Article Abstract:

The Matthew Gallery is holding an exhibition of notebooks and sketches made by the Prussian architect, Karl Friedrich Schinkel during a visit to Britain in 1826. Schinkel was the city architect of Berlin and came to Britian to study the work of Sir Robert Smirke and other architects as well as technological and housing design. Schinkel's notes show he was unimpressed by urban housing and by great public buildings but was inspired by engineering design and industrial architecture.
