Serious about Skoda

Article Abstract:

Volkswagenwerk AG (VW) has surprised many automobile industry observers by opting to continue production of Skoda car models. Most observers had expected VW, which has a controlling stake in the Czech automobile company, to use the Czech company's facilities as a base to produce cars for its three European units: VW, Audi and SEAT. VW acquired its 31% controlling interest in Skoda in 1990 and is set to increase its stake to 70% in 1994. The German automobile group believes that Skoda's excellent engineering tradition and high-quality workforce should enable the Czech company to eventually emerge as a competitive car maker that can operate with relative independence from VW's other European units. VW has committed itself to investing over 9 billion deutschemarks to achieve the somewhat ambitious goal of transforming the backward Czech automobile maker into a modern and efficient car company.

Prussians of the south

Article Abstract:

Spain has recently emerged from repression and is eager to become an important presence in the European Community (EC), joining the three dominating countries of Germany, France, and the UK. Participants in the EC, such as Germany, believe Spain can be successful because of its industriousness that is often compared to Germany's own work ethic. Volkswagen even decided to profile its Spanish operations in its 1988 annual report to publicize Spain's growing importance in producing high quality cars, and Spain's increasingly important and historical relationship with Germany.
