Servicing the after-market

Article Abstract:

Foreign automobile manufacturers are investing in after-sale service centers as a way of boosting new vehicle sales. Analysts believe there is a lucrative aftermarket in providing parts, service and repair and foreign investors are setting up centralized distribution networks. The Chinese government is working to set up a licensing system to prevent more than 80% of the repair shops in Beijing alone from using pirated products and compromising safety.

The automotive industry in China has experienced difficulties generally stemming from a lack of demand. The demand for motor vehicles is estimated to fall about 5% in 1998, well shore of expectations from manufacturers. Chinese plants deliver 18 times the number of defects of Japanese plants. Worker participants schemes are being introduced to develop cost-saving improvements.

Missing in action

Article Abstract:

A sister recounts the story of how her brother was reported as missing in action during the Vietnam war. Her family waited and hoped and spoke of the brother in present tense. Finally his body was released by Hanoi, and flown home to receive a hero's burial.
