Preserving the pieces

Article Abstract:

English Heritage is to fund underground mapping of historic British towns. This is intended to provide more certainty about the location of archaeological remains and will help developers, archaeologists and planners. The move marks a change in empahsis in archaeology from the rescue work of the 1980s to a more conservationist approach were remains are mapped but left in place. New buildings would have to be designed to do minimal damage to the remains. English Heritage's plans are based on work done in York, England where planning policy is based on maps showing the distribution of remains below the ground.
