Shake, rattle and roll: General Motors

Article Abstract:

Chairman and CEO Robert Stempel, president Lloyd Reuss, and CFO Robert O'Connell, were recently replaced at General Motors. The management change follows GM.s record loss of $4.5 billion in 1991. Stempel had begun reorganization efforts before his dismissal by GM's board of directors.

Article Abstract:

A boardroom coup made major changes at General Motors, where Robert Stempel was forced out as chairman and CEO. The task of rescuing the firm, which lost $7 billion in North America in 1991, now rests mostly with new CEO Jack Smith, who helped turn around GM in Europe.

Leather, luxury and losses: Jaguar and Saab

Article Abstract:

Ford bought Jaguar and GM bought Saab-Scania in 1989, and found inefficient production practices in need of serious overhaul. Saab is recovering more quickly, with a new car on the market developed for a mere $1 billion. Further plans for Saab and Jaguar are discussed.
