Shaping China's new nuclear doctrine

Article Abstract:

China is undertaking a major strategic review of its nuclear policy as recent events such as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization intervention in Yugoslavia and the renewed ties of US and Japan dictate the need for such. China's efforts at expanding its nuclear weapons arsenal, as confirmed by the recently declassified report of a US Congress Select Committee, are seen to influence the second half of the first nuclear century. This behooves the US to hold serious talks with China on the future of nuclear weapons so that a new strategic relationship between the two countries can be defined.

U.S. co-opts Asia's antiterrorist agendas

Article Abstract:

The terrorist attacks of September 11 have resulted in the United States becoming the leader of a global coalition against terrorism, usurping China and Russia as a united front against militant Islam. Countries such as Pakistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan, which were formerly partners with China in the fight against extremism, are now providing support for the U.S. The anti-terrorism agenda also took precedent over economic and trade talks at an APEC gathering in Shanghai recently, despite China's upcoming entrance to the World Trade Organization.
