Article Abstract:

Recently, UNESCO placed Lijiang, China on its list of cultural heritage sites. This picturesque city has already been despoiled by modern influences. However, enough of the old charm survives to bring in about 30,000 tourists visit the city. To preserve its past and its appeal to tourists, the city is embarking on a self preservation program.

Rumor mills: The Sars crisis unleashes a wild deluge of mobile-phone text messages and e-mail

Article Abstract:

Text messaging is being used by people in Hong Kong and China to keep informed about severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). The country's governments, however, have different policies on text messaging, with Hong Kong sending text messages to its citizens, and China restricting international text messaging traffic.
