Shattered land: elections contested as country slides towards war

Article Abstract:

Escalating political violence in Cambodia is marring the approach of UN-sponsored elections, which will be held May 23-28, 1993. The Khmer Rouge has launched coordinated attacks designed to wrest as much land as possible from the other factions and from the pro-Vietnam Phnom Penh government, which has countered with violence of its own including possibly the murder of an opposition leader. Although the UN Transitional Authority in Cambodia insists that the peace process will go forward, most observers believe that civil war has already returned to Cambodia.

Big squeeze; Taipei overshadowed by China's Asean thrust

Article Abstract:

China has increased diplomatic efforts to isolate Taiwan from members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). China is proposing its own dialogue with ASEAN countries which includes signing a draft accord strengthening the relationship between ASEAN and Beijing. Analysts report that ASEAN has backed away from signing such an agreement, wary that it could set a precedent for future diplomacy with China.
