Article Abstract:

Chinese hi-tech companies are providing competition for foreign firms, and this is especially true for the telecommunications industry. Some half foreign equipment firms are making losses. Chinese companies can offer more appropriate technology at lower prices, and benefit from an emphasis on research. Huawei Technologies is one of the fast-developing Chinese telecoms equipment companies that have increased their stake in the market to around half, from 10%, leaving foreign companies with a smaller stake. Foreign companies are more successful in the mobile market which uses a western standard, but this could change.

Laser-guided

Article Abstract:

TerraBeam networks has developed bandwidth technology that could bring major changes to telecoms. The company was founded by Greg Amadon, who has used laser communications technology to develop a point-to-multipoint network. The technology uses a transmitter/receiver sending data at as much as two gigabit per sec. The company aims to be a service provider as well as sell its technology. There are questions as to whether the company will be able to cope with the demand of being a service provider, and the Baby Bells are likely to hope that it cannot.

Broadband bottleneck

Article Abstract:

Broadband services could reach households if there is an agreement on delivery methods between regulators and companies. Some 2.2 million households in the US could benefit from a broadband connection by year-end 1999 with 2 million of these households using special modems geared to functioning with cable systems. Cable operators have designed broadband service technology so interconnection os only possible with affiliated Internet-service providers. This could be changed using new equipment but would involve upgrading many cable modems.
