Singapore case raises corporate-governance questions

Article Abstract:

Hugh Young, managing director of Aberdeen Asset Management Asia Ltd., is being sued by Fraser and Neave Ltd. on the grounds of defamation. Mr. Young sent a letter to a newspaper, claiming that Fraser sold CarnaudMetalbox Asia to U.S. company Crown Cork & Seal Co. at an inadequate price that does not compensate shareholders for the loss of status listing on their shares. The actual case is due to begin next year, following all judgments and appeals.

A vexing time for expats

Article Abstract:

American expatriates living in Asia are experiencing a range of emotions following the attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001. Most Asians took a back-to-business attitude of life in a couple of days, while many Americans found it frustrating to maintain that type of attitude. At least 120,000 Americans live in Japan, 34,300 in Hong Kong and 17,000 in Singapore, according to figures from the U.S. State Department.

Retaliation may ripple through global issues

Article Abstract:

U.S. military retaliation for the terrorist attacks of September 11 could have far-reaching effects on world trade and globalization of the economy, especially if the United States does not act in concert with other nations in its response. The current Administration has taken a largely unilateral approach to global issues, and protests against globalization may be bolstered by the terrorist attacks.
