Singapore seeks to keep its edge as finance hub

Article Abstract:

Singapore has announced several new measures aimed at maintaining the country's image as the financial hub of Asia. The new measures, which will take effect during the 1st qtr. 1997, include allowing foreign companies to list shares denominated in Singapore dollars on the stock exchange and the formal acceptance of short selling. Analysts lauded such measures stressing that these will help liberalize Singapore's financial markets and bolster the country's attractiveness to investors.

Rates dispute jolts Meralco: Manila's moves stir caution over utility firm

Stocks of Manila Electric Co, the biggest retail distributor of electricity in the Philippines, has been adversely affected by damaging moves by government regulators for allegedly exceeding the maximum profit allowable. The moves have prompted numerous analysts to recommend against buying shares in the company. The analysts deem that the company faces a drawn-out court fray since a short-term solution is unlikely as national elections is only two months away, slated in May 1998.

Singapore startles investors with hold on major listing

Article Abstract:

The investor community was caught unawares by the Singapore government's sudden decision to postpone the initial public offering for Singapore Power. Widely regarded as Singapore's biggest stock listing for 1996, the Singapore Power offering was put on hold because of certain problems in earnings. The government wants to fix the company's situation before proceeding with the offering, which is now scheduled for mid-1996.
