Slim pickings

Article Abstract:

Trends in Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index and Smith New Court's new small-cap index indicate the stockmarket's lack of variety and close ties to the US market in 30-year bonds. In May 1995, SNC predicted a rally for companies with smaller capitalizations, and one quickly followed. Now, however, the larger companies are about to catch up, suggesting institutional investors have few real choices, especially if liquidity is important. It also implies there is little point in more extensive and expensive analyses of the market.

Hong Kong plays it cool

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong businessmen and officials seem unruffled by the flap between China and Taiwan, with the greatest concern focused on the US Congress's response to the affair. Outright conflict would severely crimp Hong Kong's business moving Taiwan goods to China, which totalled some $21 billion in 1995. Likelier, however, is that the Congress will not renew China's Most Favored Nation trading status. That could cut 2.1% to 3% off Hong Kong's GDP growth rate, which hit only 4.6% in 1995 and was slowing at the end.

Que pasa?

Article Abstract:

The weakening of the Hong Kong dollar against the US dollar, which began in the autumn of 1994, is seen as particularly worrisome because it indicates the weakness of Hong Kong's stock market. In the context of Dec 1994 devaluation of the Mexican peso, the reliability of emerging markets had become a concern for investors. Interest rates may go up in Hong Kong to counter the weakening of the currency and this will affect the already weak property and share markets.
