Slorc's persecution of Burmese Muslims is bad business

Article Abstract:

Western diplomats and human-rights groups intend to monitor Burma's State Law and Order Council (SLORC) to ensure that it does not continue practices which have earned for it the reputation as 'one of the world's most repressive regimes.' Its latest victims have been Muslim businessmen in Rangoon, who have been forced to close their businesses and transfer to the wilderness. SLORC's moves will also be closely monitored by the Assn. of Southeast Asian Nations, which has invited Burma to attend its upcoming meeting as an observer.

... While a castle beckons just over the border

Article Abstract:

The great stone castle of Prasat Hin Phanom Rung in northeastern Thailand is one of the best-preserved examples of Angkorean architecture. Built between the 10th and 13th centuries, the castle served as a Hindu temple in honor of the deities Vishnu and Shiva. Phanom Rung boasts many magnificent pediments, towers and carvings but its biggest attraction is probably the Phra Narai lintel, a carved relief bearing the images of Lord Narayana, Brahma, Vishnu and Kala.
