Small beginnings

Article Abstract:

Many observers are expressing concern about the lack of entrepreneurship in Europe. There is little advice for those wishing to set up their own business, in sharp contrast with the situation in the US, and it is often easier to restructure small firms than set up risky new ventures. Furthermore, Europeans tend to undervalue rapidly expanding companies. However, there are indications that, in the right conditions, high technology ventures can be successful in Europe.

Fabulous and fabless: small firms in Japan

Article Abstract:

Several of Japan's small firms contract out their fabrication needs to larger firms, thereby turning the tables on the traditional Japanese manufacturing arrangement. The personal computer firm Akia, a fabless firm with no manufacturing facilities, uses firms such as Toshiba as subcontractors.
