Small wonders: for the past four years, they've been the stockmarket starts and the leaders in their market sectors. They may not be big, but they'r clever

Article Abstract:

The top 100 small quoted companies have many similarities with average sales of 44 million pounds sterling and market capitalisation of 88 million pounds sterling. In 79 cases shareholders, in particular directors, hold at least 10% of equity. Nearly half of the firms are founder firms, usually operated by one individual, followed by family companies, and the remaining few run by professional teams. The current success of each of the companies is put down to an impressive product, being in the right place at the right time, or through pure management.

The small business wish-list

Article Abstract:

UK small businesses would like greater support, less bureaucracy and reforms to the economy and taxation, according to five businessmen and women. John Rutherford, chief executive of Rutherford Web, payroll software company, is critical of the bureaucracy caused by the Working Time Directive, and feels there should be greater support. His view is echoed by others. It is hoped that the government's new Small Business Service will improve the lot of small businesses.
