PLN cancels power pact with Suharto-linked firm

Article Abstract:

PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PNL), Indonesia's state-controlled electricity company, has terminated a contract to purchase electricity from PT Cikarang Listrindo, a power distributor connected to a cousin of Mr. Suharto. PLN President Djiteng Marsudi also announced that the company would stop making payments to the Sengkang power facility in South Sulawesi, whose ownership is held by Energy Equity of Australia and El Paso of the US. The economic crisis in Asia is not the only cause of PLN's troubles but also the huge number of power-purchase agreements signed by PLN in recent years.

Qatar fund plans investor venture with Indonesia

Article Abstract:

The Indonesian government and the Qatar Investment Authority have created an investment holding company with $1 bil for projects in the Indonesian region. 15% of the joint venture is owned by the Indonesian government, with 85% owned by the Qatar Investment Authority. Plans include tourism development and the construction of a power plant.

After the Indian Ocean Earthquake and Tsunami of 2004, the economy of Banda Aceh, Indonesia and Sumatra have been turned upside down. Market prices are soaring for rents and wages. The prices of chicken and salt are up, while beef and fish don't sell.
