SmithKline chief to quit for top Chiroscience post

Article Abstract:

SmithKline Beecham PLC CFO High Collum intends to leave the firm to become the chairman of Chiroscience Group PLC of Cambridge, England. Collum, 58, is set to replace Lord Henry Chilver as chairman on Oct. 1, 1998. Sources stated that Collum plans to leave SmithKline before the annual shareholders' meeting in April 1999. Chiroscience CEO John Padfield declared that the company has always wanted a chairman who is an international businessman and is well known among investors in the US and in Europe.

Roche, Decode Genetics locate bone disease gene

Article Abstract:

Switzerland-based pharmaceutical manufacturer Roche Holding Ltd. and its biotech ally Iceland-based Decode Genetics Inc. will announce soon that they have located a gene believed to cause osteoarthritis. Officials from both companies said the the gene is one of several genes responsible for various forms of osteoarthritis, a degenerative bone disease affecting 40 million people worldwide.
