Sociology's saviour

Article Abstract:

The academic discipline of sociology was unfashionable in the United Kingdom during the governments of Margaret Thatcher, and Thatcher herself argued that society did not exist. Sociologists themselves are divided on this issue, with some placing more emphasis on the individual, and others placing more emphasis on society. Max Weber, a key sociologist, preferred to focus on individuals. The change in government to one ruled by the Labor party has led to a greater emphasis on society in politics. The political climate affects the way sociologists talk about society to the outside world.
