Softly, softly: discreet Israeli weapons sales flourish in Asia

Article Abstract:

Israeli arms sales to Asia are booming despite widespread political distaste for the Jewish state. Low prices and a reputation for battlefield-tested quality have helped make it China's biggest supplier and have kept Singapore as its best customer for decades. Most of its sales are in low-profile equipment and upgrades to Western-made weapons systems, and they come with no political strings attached. Israel has a policy of not announcing its sales or releasing figures, but in 1994 it joined the UN Arms Register.

Full circle: Israel's air links with Asia take flight

Article Abstract:

Increased business ties and warmer political relations have fueled a surge in flight connections between Israel and Asia since 1991. Now Israel's national carrier, El Al, lands in six Asian cities, with plans for three more. In 1994, 15,000 Israelis visited India and 40,000 Thailand, while Israel imported 40,000 Asian guest workers. Trade between Asia and Israel rose from $4.3 billion in 1993 to $5.1 billion in 1994. The reluctance of Arab countries to let Israeli planes overfly remains a serious obstacle.
